How to Stop Snoring at Night and Save Your Relationship

November 11th, 2010 No comments

Nearly all of us snore from time to time, but that’s not what I’m addressing here. I’m addressing chronic snoring, where the snorer’s problem is so bad that it affects, not just them, but their partner and even the rest of the family.

Let’s make one thing very clear: snoring at night isn’t a joke! It’s an extremely serious problem for health (physical and mental) and relationships. Many relationships just don’t survive the constant sleepless nights.

You don’t want this to happen to you, so you need to take action right away if you, or your loved one, is suffering from night snoring to such an extent that it’s affecting your relationship.

As a start, let’s consider first what actually causes snoring at night…

Snoring occurs during sleep but not when you’re awake. You already know this of course, but by repeating it here, it’ll help you to understand the snoring cause better.

Snoring is the sound that you emit when you breathe in and out during sleep. Because you’re asleep, possibly on you back, all the muscles and surrounding tissue in your airways relax. Not only that, because they are so relaxed, and you are in a prone position, they fall more easily into your airways.

As you breathe in and out, the air then flows through these restricted passageways and speeds up. The speeded-up air then sets up vibrations in the tissues in the airways which thus produce the noises we know as snoring.

Okay, now you understand the cause of snoring, let’s look at how to stop snoring at night…

Everything you do to try to stop your snoring has to be done in advance of you sleeping, since you have no control over anything whilst you sleep.

Firstly, have a word with your doctor about your condition. He or she will be able to assess how bad your snoring is and be able to explain your treatment options. Being fully aware of this is a big step forward in your battle to stop snoring.

Secondly, as you doctor will advise, you may have to make several lifestyle changes or adjustments. These are things like avoiding alcohol, cutting out cigarettes, avoiding sedatives or tranquilizers, losing weight, no big meals close to bedtime, change your sleeping position, and set a strict sleeping schedule, etc.

The next thing is to look at the various stop snoring devices there are. These are aids such as snore pillows, snoring mouthpieces, nasal strips, and CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure), etc.

And, of course, there are many natural home remedies for snoring such as aromatherapy, acupressure, acupuncture, herbs and homeopathic remedies, etc.

Surgery is only ever used as a last resort. Various procedures are used depending on the underlying cause of the snoring problem. The key here, is to ensure you fully understand the benefits and the risks before embarking on this course of action.

By following these five steps on how to stop snoring at night, both you and your partner will be able to enjoy a good night’s sleep.

If You’re Not Napping, You’re Losing Time In Your Day

June 27th, 2010 No comments

Everyday there will be new things compounding on you that really affect your healthy and happy daily nature.  Typically we are under such pressure from work and family… not to mention many people struggle with financial pressure that functioning is hard.  All of these compounding stresses just make us always feel like we are short on time and that can have some consequences.

That’s why taking a nap can really do you well. It not only will relax you and improve your mood, but it can give you more energy to be more productive during the rest of your day.  You really need to know that these naps are twenty to thirty minutes long… too long and they can have bad effects on your day.

The key to these short naps is instantly getting as comfortable as you possibly can.  That means having a bed that you can really get zonked out in.  The biggest comfort factor will be your bedding and using luxury silk sheets can really help you fall asleep fast.   If you can’t afford silk then maybe bamboo bedding or a good mattress topper will take that comfort level to a new high.

Light can be a problem since during the day you don’t have access to much dark. However, you can easily use a sleep mask to help get rid of the light.  Sleep masks work really well to block out light and they are not hard to wear as long as you have a comfortable one.

You will be surprised at how great you feel when you wake up and many times you will feel like you’ve been sleeping for hours. Just listen to your body. Check this video out explaining some other benefits of napping:

I hope that you can see and can somehow make these short naps fit into your day.  Hopefully you can make it home for a little siesta and relax in a comfortable bed using silk bed sheets or something luxurious so you fall asleep very quickly and wake up incredibly refreshed, healthy, and ready to knock out the rest of your day.

3 Ways To Help You Sleep At Night

May 25th, 2010 No comments

Not being able to get to sleep at night is horrible, you’ve had an exhausting day, you know you have lots to do tomorrow and you need to get up early, yet you lie there tossing and turning and can’t get to sleep at all. But what can you do to cure that? Well below we look at 3 things you can do to make sure you get a good nights sleep:

Relax before bed: This is not as simple as it sounds. Lots of people go straight from being submerged in the fast-pace of their waking hours and then try to go straight to sleep, that just doesn’t work. Throughout our day we are constantly begin bombarded with adverts, requests for our time, our phone ringing, kids running around etc, and if you try to go to sleep straight after all that then your head is spinning and can’t settle down.

Most people try to relax by watching some TV before they go to bed, but often that just makes things worse as you see fast-paced action, noisy adverts and get involved in complex storylines etc. The best way to relax is with a book, read for 20 – 30 minutes before you go to bed and it will help you focus on one thing and settle your mind down, or you could sit down and right a list of what you need to do the next day so you don’t think it over while in bed.

Add some noise to the night: You can actually get devices called white noise generators which produce a constant sound that helps to drown out the small noises of the night, and break up the silence which can sometimes be unnerving. Don’t ask me why having some noise at night can help you sleep, but I keep a dehumidifier in my bedroom to make a constant humming sound so I know that it works. Give it a try and see what you think!

Exercise: I don’t mean going on an exercise bike just before bed, which will actually make it harder to get to sleep, but if you do some exercise during the day then you will be more tired when you go to bed so your mind and body will gratefully surrender to sleep. Also if you keep up the exercise then you’ll be losing weight and making your body healthier, so your sleep at night will be a better quality as your body does not have to fight as many problems when you try and rest.

There are loads of different ways for you to get to sleep quicker, these are just 3 of my favourites, and you might actually need to combine all 3 if you really struggle to get to sleep. These methods might seem like a lot of work, and you wonder how you are going to fit them into your busy schedule, but the next time you are lying in bed looking at the ceiling for hours then I think you’ll decide they are worth it.
