Why Sleep Apnea Tests Are Significant
Sleep apnea is a condition that should not be taken lightly. Although it may be taken as much worse a condition than snoring, it is actually an ailment that can be deadly. Sleep apnea does not just create those annoying sounds which can be identified as snoring. This is not only a major concern of the person who sleeps with one who has sleep apnea. The more serious aspect of it is that it prevents the person from breathing normally while he is asleep. Hence it is actually a concern of the sleeper himself, one that deprives him of breathing air and ultimately life.
This is the reason why people who feel they have this condition must immediately take a sleep apnea test. It is with this test that physicians and sleep experts will be able to determine if the person is indeed suffering with such a condition. Once the sleep apnea test shows positive results, then the physician will have to prescribe oral medications. Yet, other methods must also be used to prevent this condition. A physician may also recommend the use of certain devices such as the CPAP in order to encourage normal breathing while asleep. Aside from CPAP there are many other contraptions that can be worn or inserted into the mouth to normalize breathing.
Nocturnal polysomnography is one common sleep apnea test. In this type of evaluation, specific kinds of equipment may be hooked to the patient while he is sleeping. This machine helps the physician in monitoring how the person’s lungs and heart function. Breathing pattern is also noticed as well as legs and arms’ movements. The more advanced types of this machine also allows the physician to monitor the mental activity that goes on in the person while he is asleep. A sleep apnea test can be applied at home by the patient on his own through the use of portable devices for monitoring. By such devices, the patient may also check his very own heart rate, breathing pattern and level of blood oxygen. However, not at all times that these devices may be able to figure out sleep apnea. Due to this, it would still be a necessity to visit the doctor and undergo nocturnal polysomnography.
